Basmati Rice basmati is a variety of long grain rice, famous for its fragrance and delicate flavour. Its name means "Queen of Fragrance" in Hindi. Basmati rice has been cultivated in the Indian subcontinent for hundreds of years. The Himalayan foothills are said to produce the best basmati. Although all Basmati Varieties are fragrant rice of highest quality, commercially, The Super Basmati, a premium variety from Pakistan and Dehra Dun from India, are the most prized of the basmati varieties. Patna rice is a close cousin of basmati rice grown around Patna in Bihar. The best types of basmati rice are aged for several years before they are milled and sold, as rice cooks better with a lower moisture content. Basmati rice is available both as a white rice and a brown rice.

Brown basmati rice is a source of minerals like iron and B vitamins such as thiamine, niacin and folate, though it does not contain a high concentration of any of these. According to the USA Rice Federation, a better choice for rice that supplies more vitamins and minerals per serving is white basmati rice that's been enriched, particularly with folate. A typical serving of cooked white rice contains 46 micrograms of folate, or over 11 percent of the recommended daily allowance for healthy adults.
